One of the most important component of a MotoGP racing bike is the custom-made engine that is designed for power and acceleration. These engines have to produce maximum output, light-weight yet strong enough to last through the gruelling season without breaking down. To accomplish that, Yamaha Factory Racing team and ENEOS jointly develops specially formulated MotoGP racing engine oil that will sufficiently protect the critical engine against wear and tear, while providing the maximum power.

Development of MotoGP racing oil

In an interview with ENEOS, Ms. Mari Iino from the JXTG Engine Oil Group of Lubricant Research Laboratory, shared with us her experience on the development of factory fill oil and genuine oil used for motorcycles and outboard motors of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (“Yamaha Motor”).

Given different performance requirements, racing oil requires higher power while commercially available oil requires longer oil change period. Therefore, racing oil is designed in a way that controls the longer oil change period to the minimum extent to obtain higher power. Specifically speaking, the amount of base material that protects the engine is minimized while the amount of base material that improves the power is maximized.

In addition, a racing engine structure that has a lubrication method different from that of a commercially available vehicle is chosen, and the base oil and additives suitable for special coating material are used and balanced. In the early stage of development, a lot of effort has been made to figure out the adaptability and durability of lubricant components, and after a number of improvements the power has been enhanced.

Technologies formed in the development of racing oil are also used for the development of genuine oil. Since spring of 2015, racing oil based on our technology has been sold as genuine oil in Japan.

 

Development of commercially available ENEOS oil

ENEOS is the brand name of products produced and supplied by JXTG.

In recent years, motorcycle engine designs has shifted from two-stroke to four-stroke to reduce exhaust emissions. A four-stroke motorcycle engine is different from a four-stroke automotive engine. In terms of motorcycle engine oil, a common oil tank is shared by an engine, a clutch and a gearbox. In addition, the four-stroke motorcycle engine has different lubricant cooling method and engine rotation area from the four-stroke automotive engine.

Therefore, in addition to effective engine protection properties (oxidation stability, abrasion resistance and detergency), motorcycle engine oil must satisfy numerous requirements of clutch and gear operability. For example, friction modifier blended in automotive engine oil to improve fuel-saving property may serve as the main cause of clutch slipping. Motorcycle engine oil is blended with friction modifier and wear-resistant component that provide fuel-saving property while give the best clutch performance. However, motor scooters are increasingly using CVT instead of wet clutch, which does not require clutch performance.
